Why Do I Feel So Tired All the Time After 50?
Marion Brand
One of the questions I hear most often is:
"Why do I feel so tired now? I haven't really changed anything."
If you've been wondering the same thing, you're definitely not alone.
Many people notice that somewhere in their late 40s or 50s, their energy just isn't what it used to be. The workouts that once felt easy now leave them exhausted. Recovery takes longer. Motivation seems harder to find. Even getting through the day can sometimes feel like a challenge.
The good news?
You're not lazy.
And you're certainly not imagining it.
There are several reasons why energy changes as we get older.
For women, shifting hormones during menopause can affect sleep quality, muscle recovery, body temperature, stress levels and even motivation to exercise.
For both women and men, we naturally begin losing muscle mass if we don't actively work to maintain it. Less muscle often means lower energy, slower metabolism and feeling weaker during everyday activities.
Then there's life itself.
Many of us are caring for aging parents, helping adult children, working full-time, managing homes and juggling more responsibilities than ever before. That mental load is exhausting.
Here's the mistake I see so often.
People assume you need to push harder.
β You try bootcamps.
β Long workouts.
β Seven-day exercise streaks.
Then you end up even more exhausted.
Instead, ask yourself this question:
"What kind of movement gives me energy instead of taking it away?"
That's the sweet spot.
β Sometimes it's a brisk walk.
β Sometimes it's twenty minutes of strength training.
β Sometimes it's stretching and mobility.
Movement shouldn't leave you feeling defeated every day.
It should leave you feeling more capable.
One of the biggest compliments I receive is when members tell me,
"I actually have more energy now than before I started exercising."
That isn't magic.
It's what happens when you train your body instead of punishing it.
This Week's Challenge
Instead of asking:
"How hard should I work?"
Ask:
"How can I move today so I feel better afterward?"
That small shift changes everything.
